Five Lochs

Five Lochs, Butterstone, Perthshire and Kinross, Scotland

The five lochs which make up the Lunan Lochs complex between Dunkeld and Blairgowrie contribute to one of the most scenic areas in Perthshire. And beneath the surface of these shallow lochs is a fragile ecology of such international importance that some years ago groundbreaking measures were planned by Scottish Natural Heritage to protect the plants, insects, fish and birds which live in or around these lochs.

The Lunan Lochs comprise Craiglush, Butterstone, Loch of the Lowes (made world famous by the osprey known as Lady who produced a fantastic number of chicks) Clunie and Marlee.

These are lowland lochs which are quite shallow with clear water so the sun can get down a long way, allowing diverse plant life, fish and insects. There are a number of rare plants growing in and around the lochs, also insects and large numbers of geese coming to roost in the winter.
