Neidpath Barmkin, Neidpath Castle, Peebles, is perfect for a romantic self catering getaway - but sleeps up to 6, so it's an ideal choice for families too.
Many Scottish baronial homes had barmkins. These buildings are often listed in their own right nowadays. At Neidpath, they were once part of the castle's defences, and may have been used to shelter cattle during raids. 'Nid' meant cattle in ancient times, and the castle's name may derive from the narrow pass along the river where the cattle were herded. The Neidpath Barmkin is a conversion of part of the historic buildings, and is now a welcoming and atmospheric cottage, inside and out. Enjoy the comforts of splendid four poster bed, roaring log fire, and well equipped kitchen. To make your stay extra special, there are lovely products from The Highland Soap Company, and a breakfast hamper brimming with goodies.

A stay at the Neidpath Barmkin is the perfect way to enjoy the very best of the amazing landscape and wonderful views. Everything about Neidpath is wonderfully dramatic, from the castle itself to the breathtaking scenery. It's a truly spectacular location, overlooking the River Tweed in the very heart of the Scottish Borders.
The fast flowing, every changing River Tweed is one of the most beautiful rivers in Scotland. We're not alone in thinking that - one of Sir Walter Scott's favourite viewpoints was of the Tweed, slightly further down river from our own private vantage point above the valley. Close to the riverside, the Barmkin has a truly unique location for a holiday cottage.
It might be hard to tear yourself away from the Barmkin, with its cosy cottage feel and lovely private garden. But you're just 10 minutes walk away from Peebles, along the river. So why not enjoy all the sights and sounds along the way? The Tweed is an exceptionally clean river, and home to a huge variety of wildlife. Look out for the salmon. And don't be surprised if you're joined on your walk by a grey heron, osprey or a kingfisher or two.
