Smailholm Tower

Smailholm Tower, Melrose, Scottish Borders, Scotland

Smailholm Tower - Discover one of Scotland's best preserved medieval tower houses.

Standing proudly on a rocky crag in the Scottish Borders, Smailholm Tower is one of Scotland's finest surviving medieval tower houses. Built during the 15th century, the impressive fortified tower overlooks the surrounding countryside and offers spectacular panoramic views across the Borders towards the Cheviot Hills. Its commanding position reflects its original purpose of defending the region during centuries of Anglo-Scottish border conflict.

Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, the tower has been carefully preserved and offers visitors the opportunity to explore several floors of fascinating exhibits. Displays tell the story of Border life, the history of the tower and the constant struggle between rival clans and invading armies that shaped this remarkable landscape.

Smailholm Tower also has a special literary connection as the childhood inspiration of Sir Walter Scott. The famous Scottish author spent time nearby and later credited the tower and its dramatic setting as inspiring many of the castles and stories featured throughout his novels and poems.

Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for breathtaking views across the rolling countryside, while the surrounding walking paths provide excellent opportunities for photography and exploring this peaceful corner of the Scottish Borders. Opening times vary throughout the year, so visitors are advised to check the official Historic Environment Scotland website before travelling.
