Lismore Castle Gardens - Explore one of Ireland's most magnificent historic gardens.
Located in the picturesque heritage town of Lismore in County Waterford, Lismore Castle is the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire and one of Ireland's most impressive historic estates. Originally associated with the Earls of Desmond, the castle passed to the Dukes of Devonshire in 1753 and was extensively rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style during the nineteenth century by William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire. While the castle remains a private residence, its spectacular gardens are open to visitors.
The gardens are among the finest in Ireland and combine centuries of horticultural excellence. The Upper Garden is a beautifully restored 17th century walled garden featuring colourful seasonal planting, while the Lower Garden offers sweeping lawns, mature trees, ornamental borders and peaceful walks created during the nineteenth century. The estate also includes a contemporary art gallery, adding a modern cultural element to this historic setting.
The gardens and gallery are open daily from 13 March until 25 October between 10:30am and 5:30pm, with last admission at 4:30pm.
Dogs are welcome provided they remain on a lead and owners clean up after them. Guided garden tours can be arranged for groups by advance booking. Free parking is available on the castle driveway, except on Sundays when it is used for the local farmers market, with additional parking available nearby in the town car park.
Whether you are passionate about gardens, history, architecture or simply looking for a peaceful day out, Lismore Castle Gardens offer an unforgettable visitor experience.
