Lagan Valley National Landscape - Discover peaceful riverside walks between Belfast and Lisburn.
Stretching between Belfast and Lisburn, Lagan Valley National Landscape (formerly the Lagan Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is one of Northern Ireland’s most accessible and beautiful protected landscapes. Following the course of the River Lagan as it flows towards Belfast Lough, the area offers a wonderful combination of woodland, riverside scenery, wildlife and outdoor recreation.
One of the valley’s most popular attractions is the scenic Lagan Towpath, a peaceful route that follows the river from the Stranmillis area of south Belfast to Lisburn. Loved by walkers, runners, cyclists and dog walkers, the largely traffic-free path provides a relaxing way to explore the countryside while remaining close to the city. The route also forms part of National Cycle Route 9, with several off-route mountain bike trails available nearby.
The River Lagan itself has played an important role in the history and development of Belfast and, for part of its course, forms the boundary between Counties Antrim and Down. Today, the valley is a haven for wildlife, with opportunities to spot kingfishers, otters, herons and a wide variety of woodland birds throughout the year.
Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll, a scenic cycle ride, wildlife watching or simply a peaceful escape into nature, Lagan Valley National Landscape offers something for visitors of all ages.
Plan your visit to Lagan Valley National Landscape and enjoy one of Northern Ireland’s finest riverside destinations.
