Ilkley Moor

Ilkley Moor, Ilkley, Yorkshire, England

Ilkley Moor - Discover dramatic moorland, legends and the famous Cow and Calf Rocks.

Ilkley Moor forms part of Rombalds Moor, a wide stretch of moorland between Ilkley and Keighley in West Yorkshire. Rising to around 402 metres above sea level, it offers open landscapes, far reaching views and a strong sense of Yorkshire character.

One of the moor's most famous landmarks is the Cow and Calf, also known as Hangingstone Rocks. This striking millstone grit formation features a large rocky outcrop with a smaller boulder nearby, giving the appearance of a cow and calf. The area around Ilkley Quarry and Rocky Valley is also popular with walkers, photographers and climbers.

Ilkley Moor is rich in folklore. According to legend, the Calf was split from the Cow when the giant Rombald stamped on the rock while fleeing across the valley from his angry wife. Another nearby formation, the Skirtful of Stones, is said to have been created when she dropped stones from her skirt.

The moor is ideal for walking, rock climbing and enjoying panoramic views across Wharfedale. Its dramatic scenery, local legends and historic rock formations make it one of West Yorkshire's most memorable outdoor destinations.

Plan your visit to Ilkley Moor and experience one of Yorkshire's best loved moorland landscapes.
