Eilean Glas Lighthouse - Discover One of Scotland's Oldest Lighthouses on the Isle of Scalpay
Eilean Glas Lighthouse is a historic coastal landmark standing on the eastern tip of the Isle of Scalpay in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. First established in 1789, it was one of the first four lighthouses built in Scotland and has guided vessels through the waters of the Minch for more than two centuries. The present lighthouse tower, built in 1824 under the supervision of renowned engineer Robert Stevenson, is distinguished by its striking red and white bands. Surrounded by rugged coastline and open sea, Eilean Glas offers visitors an opportunity to discover Scotland's maritime heritage in a remote Hebridean setting.
The lighthouse complex includes the original tower, former lighthouse keepers' cottages and other historic buildings associated with its operation. The site is free to visit, with donations welcomed towards the preservation of the historic buildings. Visitors can explore the surrounding grounds and admire the lighthouse from outside, but the operational lighthouse tower is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. Seasonal visitor facilities include refreshments, information about the lighthouse's history and a selection of local crafts. The official visitor season runs from 1 April to 30 September, with opening hours from 10:30am to 5:30pm daily. Visitors should check the official website for the latest opening times and facilities before travelling.
Eilean Glas Lighthouse is reached by a scenic walk of approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometres) each way from the Out End car park on Scalpay. The route crosses open moorland and follows a track towards the lighthouse, with some steep and potentially slippery sections. Sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor clothing are recommended, particularly during wet or windy weather. Although the seasonal visitor facilities close at the end of September, the walking route to the lighthouse remains accessible throughout the year, subject to weather and local conditions. Visitors travelling by car should use postcode HS4 3YG for the Out End car park rather than attempting to drive directly to the lighthouse, as the final approach is on foot only.
