Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny, Kilkenny, Southern Ireland

Kilkenny Castle - Explore one of Ireland's finest medieval castles in the heart of Kilkenny City.

Standing proudly beside the River Nore, Kilkenny Castle has dominated the city skyline since it was built in 1195. Constructed by the Norman leader William Marshal, the castle was designed to control an important crossing point of the River Nore and quickly became a powerful symbol of Norman influence in Ireland. Originally protected by four impressive circular towers and a deep defensive ditch, parts of these medieval fortifications can still be seen today.

For centuries the castle was home to the influential Butler family before being transferred to the people of Kilkenny in 1967 for just £50. Today, the beautifully restored castle is managed by the Office of Public Works and welcomes visitors from around the world to discover its magnificent interiors, elegant Long Gallery, historic rooms and fascinating exhibitions.

Outside, visitors can enjoy the extensive parkland and beautifully maintained formal gardens, which are open to the public throughout the year. The castle grounds provide a wonderful place for a relaxing walk, while the impressive Parade Tower is regularly used for conferences, ceremonies and special events.

The castle is open daily throughout the year, with seasonal opening hours. Admission prices are Adult €8.00, Senior (60+) and Groups (20+ Adults/Seniors) €6.00, Child and Student €4.00, and Family €20.00.
