Powis Castle and Garden - Explore a Magnificent Medieval Castle and World-Famous Terraced Gardens in Mid Wales

Powis Castle and Garden is a magnificent National Trust attraction situated near the historic market town of Welshpool in Powys, Mid Wales. Famous for its impressive medieval castle, beautifully landscaped gardens and remarkable collection of historic treasures, it is one of the most spectacular heritage attractions in Wales.

Originally built in the 13th century by Welsh princes, Powis Castle has evolved over hundreds of years from a defensive fortress into an elegant country residence. The castle became the home of the Herbert family during the 16th century, and its architecture and interiors reflect generations of changing tastes and traditions.

Visitors can explore beautifully decorated state rooms filled with historic furniture, paintings, tapestries and decorative objects. The richly furnished interiors provide a fascinating insight into aristocratic life from the Elizabethan period through to the Edwardian era.

The castle also houses the Clive Museum, which contains an important collection of South Asian artefacts associated with Britain's colonial history. Displays explore the origins and significance of these objects, providing an opportunity to learn about their historical and cultural connections.

One of the greatest attractions is the magnificent Grade I listed garden, renowned for its dramatic Italianate terraces dating from the 17th century. The terraces feature enormous clipped yew trees, colourful flower borders and breathtaking views across the Severn Valley.

The gardens also include an elegant Edwardian formal garden, beautiful rose beds, historic apple trees and peaceful woodland areas. Seasonal planting ensures there is something different to enjoy throughout the year, from spring flowers to spectacular autumn colours.

Visitors can wander along the terraces, admire the impressive topiary and discover peaceful corners overlooking the surrounding countryside. The combination of historic architecture and beautifully maintained gardens makes Powis Castle particularly popular with photographers and garden enthusiasts.

Families can enjoy exploring the gardens and discovering the castle's fascinating history. Seasonal trails, activities and special events provide additional opportunities for younger visitors to experience this remarkable historic estate.
