Horseshoe Falls - Discover Historic Thomas Telford Engineering and Beautiful Riverside Walks in Llangollen

Horseshoe Falls is a picturesque horseshoe-shaped weir situated on the River Dee near Llangollen in Denbighshire, North Wales. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Dee Valley, this historic landmark combines impressive engineering with peaceful riverside views and attractive countryside walks.

Designed by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford and completed in the early 19th century, the weir was constructed to divert water from the River Dee into the Llangollen Canal. Measuring approximately 140 metres (460 feet) in length, its distinctive curved design creates a beautiful cascade across the river.

Horseshoe Falls marks the western end of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site. The weir is an important part of the area's industrial heritage, demonstrating the innovative engineering that helped develop Britain's canal network.

Visitors can admire the cascading water from the surrounding riverside paths and viewpoints. The combination of flowing water, woodland and rolling hills makes Horseshoe Falls a particularly attractive destination for photography and nature watching.

One of the most enjoyable ways to reach the falls is by walking along the Llangollen Canal towpath. The scenic route from Llangollen town is approximately 3 kilometres (2 miles) each way, passing through beautiful countryside beside the canal.

Visitors can also travel on the Llangollen Railway to Berwyn Station, followed by a short walk to the falls. This provides an opportunity to combine a visit with a heritage railway journey through the picturesque Dee Valley.

The nearby Chain Bridge is another interesting historic landmark, spanning the River Dee close to Berwyn Station. The surrounding area offers opportunities for walking, picnicking and enjoying the peaceful countryside.

Horseshoe Falls is free to visit, with no admission charge to enjoy the waterfall and surrounding public walking routes. The outdoor attraction can generally be visited throughout the year during daylight hours, although access may be affected by severe weather or high river levels.

The route from the car park to the waterfall involves a steep grassy slope, while the riverside paths contain uneven ground, rocks and exposed tree roots. Although the waterfall can be viewed from a higher viewpoint, access to the riverbank may be difficult for wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility.

Dogs can accompany visitors on suitable public paths but should remain under close control, particularly around livestock and the river. Visitors should take care near the water and avoid entering the river or walking onto the weir, especially when water levels are high.
