Dunyvaig Castle

Dunyvaig Castle, Lagavulin, Isle of Islay, Scotland

Dunyvaig Castle - Discover the dramatic ruins of a historic stronghold overlooking Lagavulin Bay on the Isle of Islay.

Perched on a rocky promontory on the southern coast of Islay, Dunyvaig Castle was once an important naval stronghold of the powerful MacDonald Lords of the Isles. The castle developed on the site of an earlier fortification and guarded the sheltered anchorage at Lagavulin Bay. Its turbulent history saw it pass between the MacDonalds, Macleans and Campbells, while the surviving ruins include remains dating from the medieval period and later centuries.

Today, Dunyvaig Castle is a Scheduled Monument and an atmospheric place to discover while exploring Islay. Visitors can admire the surviving walls and dramatic coastal setting, with wonderful views across Lagavulin Bay. The historic ruins stand close to Lagavulin Distillery and can be approached by footpath, although care should be taken around the rocky terrain, steep drops and fragile castle remains.
