Shetland Textile Museum - Discover the rich knitting and weaving traditions of the Shetland Islands.
The Shetland Textile Museum in Lerwick is a unique community museum dedicated entirely to the textile heritage of the Shetland Islands. Housed in the historic
Bod of Gremista, a beautifully restored fishing station, the museum offers visitors a fascinating insight into the craftsmanship that has made Shetland knitwear famous around the world.
The building itself holds special significance as the birthplace of Arthur Anderson, a passionate supporter of Shetland textiles who famously gifted Queen Victoria a pair of delicate stockings made from Shetland fine lace. Inside the museum, several exhibition rooms showcase the history and techniques behind traditional crafts such as
Fair Isle knitting, fine lace knitting, spinning and weaving.
One of the highlights of a visit is the chance to see skilled demonstrators at work. Throughout the day, experienced practitioners demonstrate knitting, spinning and occasionally weaving, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about traditional patterns, techniques and yarns. The friendly team are always happy to answer questions and share their knowledge of Shetland knitwear.
The museum also features a small gift shop selling high-quality handmade products created by talented makers from across the Shetland Islands, making it the perfect place to pick up an authentic piece of island craftsmanship.
