Cavan and Leitrim Railway

Cavan and Leitrim Railway, Dromod, Leitrim, Southern Ireland

Cavan and Leitrim Railway - Discover the story of Ireland's last all steam narrow gauge railway.

The Cavan and Leitrim Railway was one of Ireland's most distinctive railway systems and the last all steam narrow gauge railway to operate in the country. Opened in 1887, the 3 foot gauge railway ran between Belturbet in County Cavan and Dromod in County Leitrim, connecting with the Great Northern Railway at Belturbet and the Dublin to Sligo main line at Dromod.

Although the railway is no longer in operation, its fascinating history is preserved through the Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum at Dromod. The museum features an impressive collection of restored locomotives, railway carriages, signalling equipment and historical artefacts, alongside exhibits showcasing Ireland's wider transport heritage. A second museum at Belturbet also celebrates the history of this much-loved railway and the communities it once served.

For many years visitors were able to enjoy short steam train rides along a restored section of track at Dromod, helping to keep the spirit of the railway alive. Today, restoration work and preservation projects continue, allowing visitors to learn about the engineering, people and stories behind one of Ireland's most unique railways.

Whether you have an interest in railway history, engineering or Ireland's transport heritage, the Cavan and Leitrim Railway offers a fascinating insight into a remarkable chapter of Irish history.
