Causeway Coast AONB

Causeway Coast AONB, Bushmills, Antrim, Northern Ireland

Giant’s Causeway - Explore Northern Ireland’s legendary UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Giant’s Causeway is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders and Northern Ireland’s most famous attraction. Located on the spectacular Causeway Coast in County Antrim, around three miles north-east of Bushmills, this remarkable landscape is made up of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by an ancient volcanic eruption around 60 million years ago.

The unique hexagonal stone columns create a dramatic pathway stretching from the base of the cliffs into the sea, inspiring the famous legend that Irish giant Finn McCool built the causeway to cross to Scotland. While most of the columns have six sides, visitors can also spot formations with four, five, seven and even eight sides, highlighting the incredible geological processes that created this natural masterpiece.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and designated a National Nature Reserve the following year, the Giant’s Causeway is internationally celebrated for both its geological significance and outstanding natural beauty. Much of the site is cared for by the National Trust, helping to preserve this iconic landscape for future generations.

Visitors can enjoy spectacular coastal walks, breathtaking viewpoints and the award-winning Visitor Centre, while the surrounding Causeway Coast offers dramatic cliffs, historic castles and some of Northern Ireland’s finest scenery.

Whether you're fascinated by geology, captivated by local legends or simply looking to experience one of the United Kingdom’s greatest natural landmarks, the Giant’s Causeway is an unforgettable destination.
