Loch Leven - Discover a beautiful freshwater loch surrounded by wildlife, walking trails and centuries of Scottish history.

Loch Leven is a large freshwater loch situated beside Kinross in Perth and Kinross, central Scotland. Surrounded by open countryside and wetlands, the loch is internationally important for its wildlife and attracts large numbers of waterfowl throughout the year. Much of the area forms part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts.

Visitors can explore the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, a circular route of approximately 13 miles around the loch that is popular with walkers and cyclists. The mostly level route passes through woodland, wetlands and open countryside, with viewpoints and opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Loch Leven also has strong connections with Scottish history. Situated on an island within the loch are the ruins of Lochleven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567 before making a dramatic escape the following year. Seasonal boat trips provide access to the historic castle when operating.
