Shetland Isles The Shetland Islands are the most northerly point of Scotland. For thousands of years the Shetlands and their neighbours, the Orkney islands, have been welcoming friendly visitors and all too often repelling the not so friendly. Shetland is home to Europe's largest colony of otters, tiny ponies roam free and there are also fabulous seal and seabird colonies to be studied. Shetland is also famous for its lace, Shetland Lace, an accepted term for the very fine and elaborate lace knitting produced in the Shetland Isles from the 19th century onwards.
